Coins explain offside rule

The Royal Mint in the UK has released a series of new 50 pence coins to commemorate the London Summer Olympics this year. Designs were submitted by members of the public, ranging from school children to bank clerks and delivery drivers. Twenty-nine designs have been selected – one for each sport in the Olympics and Paralympics.

None have caused as much of a stir however as the design by sports journalist Neil Wolfson, which uses a diagram on the face of the coin to explain the offside rule in football (soccer to Americans). Now fans of the sport will only need to reach into their pockets for a coin in order to explain one of the most perplexing rules of the sport to the uninitiated.
