Despite a 1-0 loss, the Cayman Islands men’s football team fared better than expected in its clash on Tuesday with Guadeloupe – a team that has previously secured much larger victories over Cayman.

Cayman battled to stand its ground against its opponents, from which many fans had expected a more dominant result, given their previous encounters.

Despite dominating in possession, Guadeloupe struggled to get the upper hand on the underdogs up until the 87th minute, when Cayman’s defensive play faltered and Guadeloupe’s Vikash Tillé capitalised with the only goal of the game.

The match, held at the Stade Roger Zami grounds in Guadeloupe, concluded the teams’ Nations League ‘play-in’ series, with Guadeloupe effectively denying any chance the Caymanian squad had at the 2025 Gold Cup.

The men, however, showed notable improvements from their first leg encounter with Guadeloupe, in which Cayman took a 6-0 beating under relentless rainfall that affected the flow of the game.

Prior to that loss, the French Caribbean nation had secured a 7-1 victory over Cayman in 2008.

With such one-sided victories, Cayman fans had expected the worst – but the men’s team had other ideas on how this chapter would be written.

Now Cayman’s men will turn their attention to the World Cup qualifiers, with dates set with Bermuda for 4 June and Honduras on 7 June.
