In January of 2010, Cayman Islands Premier McKeeva Bush signed a proclamation titled the Supporting Cayman Youth Campaign, observing January as Support our Youth Month. The theme for 2012 is “Believe, Achieve”.
As part of acknowledging this year’s theme, the Cayman Islands Youth Development Consortium is hosting Celebrate our Youth Day, as one of the events of Support Our Youth Month. To further promote the importance of the strength-based approach to youth development, the CIYDC has invited 20 key government and community leaders, as well as 20 students as cosigners of the Supporting Cayman Youth Campaign.
The date designated for the undertaking is 28 January at the Mary Miller Hall from 10am to 5pm.
“To open the event a procession for all consignataries to sign a proclamation and place a block representing a developmental asset will be done,” said Sylvia Wilds of the CIYDC.
“Consigning this document would indicate that parties support this national celebration of partnerships and opportunities and also show that they believe in the importance of these opportunities for the success of our young people,” she added.
Another key factor of the exercise, according to organisers, is that each person that signs the document will be encouraging others in the Cayman Islands to engage in or support innovative youth programmes and asset building activities that ensure the holistic development and wellbeing for our youth.
So far, there are 40 organisations signed up to be represented at the event to showcase their programmers.
The day will feature some of the youthful talent in music, dance and speech and have sports exhibits like karate. There will be a host activities and competition for all who attend.
