Devils pounced on Boca

It’s hard to decide what the goal of the game was between MC Devils and Boca Juniors in the Heineken Sunday League game last weekend, such was the quality of the finishing. The two main contenders were both scored by bottom of the table MC Devils and contributed massively to be the upset of the season after they battled to a deserved 4-3 win against league title hopefuls Boca Juniors.

Devils fell behind after Henry Mitchell rose unchallenged to head home at a corner kick on eight minutes, but equalised with a truly remarkable goal when, from 40 yards out right full back Kevin Ashworth let fly with a speculative shot.

The Devils defender Ian Jamieson rose unchallenged to power a header home to put the Devils 2-1 ahead. Boca went straight on the attack after the break and deservedly pulled a goal back through Carlos Welcome who then scored from a penalty to put Boca 3-2 up.

Devils’ Fran Donoghue took the ball near the corner of Boca’s box and after flicking the ball over the head of his marker, dispatched an unstoppable volley into the net. Three minutes later and with only four minutes remaining, the unthinkable happened when Devils, after being twice behind in the game, snatched the lead for the second time. A throw-in deep in Boca’s territory resulted in a cross being swung in, and credit to James Plowright who managed to get ahead of his marker to prod the ball home at the near post. This was only Devils second win of the season and sees them move level on points with CML Claymores at the bottom of the table.

The only other fixture at the weekend was the rearranged match between Agua FC and Prison at the TE McField Annex. Agua’s recent signing, Michael McLaughlin, on his Sunday League debut, scored after 68 minutes, much to the relief of his new team mates. The win for Agua puts them clear in second place in the league, just three points behind league leaders Harry’s FC who are sitting on 28 points.
