All Stars upset depleted Roma

It is early but All Stars recently delivered a statement game in Cayman Islands netball.

The Cayman National Bank All Stars B team defeated Roma A 37-35 last Thursday in the Cayman Islands Netball Association 2012 open league. The contest took place at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts.

One of the players that orchestrated the upset was AS B captain Tishelle Logan, 22. The George Town native states her side (who are now 1-1) can replicate those showings the rest of the season.

“We have what it takes to come out victorious,” Logan said. “We just got to work on fitness and work as a team more. We have a new shooter in Karen Smith-James and we will train our hardest and do our best.

“Definitely Roma is our focus. Their B team beat us and everything last year. We got to work on our fitness for that game (tentatively slated for 3 March) and play a strong game.”

Roma may be the defending two-time national champions but they did not look like it. Only five players suited up for the yellow and white warriors in Goal Shooter Sherine Christie, Goal Attack Nicola Pringle, Centre Stacy-Ann Dehaney, Goal Defence Paula Hughes and Goal Keeper Carrie Barnett.

To their credit, those ladies put up a spirited fight as the quarter breakdown saw Roma hold leads in the second and third period (10-7 and 10-9 respectively). AS would claim the first (12-7) and fourth (9-8) quarters.

Aside from Logan (who was GA), the rest of the AS line-up saw Karen Smith-James (GS), Christina Watler (Wing Attack), Charlotte Shephard (C), Shenaye Watson (Wing Defence), Benecia Mullings (GD), Meagan Hurlston (GK) with Lesley-Ann Bernard, Marika Williams and Jane Sinclair as subs.

AS B play again next Saturday, 11 February, against their A counterparts while Roma A tackle Unity B on 16 February at 6.30pm.
