North Side residents urged to nominate honourees

Residents invited to District Council meeting

Residents of North Side are urged to turn out to the next District Council meeting and nominate worthy citizens for Queen’s Birthday Honours.

At last month’s meeting, MLA Ezzard Miller expressed his disappointment that not a single North Sider had been honoured on National Heroes Day, especially when the ceremony this year was focused on teachers. He said North Side has produced some outstanding teachers, but none were recognised.

Archie Whittaker, who manages the MLA office, told the gathering that the deadline to nominate individuals for the Queen’s Birthday Honours is Monday, 16 April.

“I propose we send in properly documented nominations,” Mr. Miller said.

He revealed that in the past he had recommended, for three years in a row, well-respected North Siders Dr. Mel McCoy and Mrs. Nettie McCoy. Neither have been so recognised.

Council chairperson Alex Johnson urged the public to turn out for the next meeting, scheduled for Thursday, 23 February, at 8pm at the Craddock Ebanks Civic Centre.

Residents will be encouraged to put their nominations forward at that time.

The Queen’s Birthday is observed in the Cayman Islands this year on Monday, 18 June, a public holiday.

A special holiday, to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, will be celebrated on Monday, 4 June.
