Swindon Town kids must be impressed with our locals

English professional side Swindon Town must be really impressed with Cayman’s young footballers after their second match ended in another 1-1 draw.

At a packed Ed Bush Field in West Bay on Tuesday night, the visiting Under 13s from Swindon Town were thwarted by a West Bay select team.

The game was a very clean and even affair throughout with few clear-cut chances but loads of action. The two opposing goalkeepers dealt well with most of the long-range efforts as the majority of play took place in midfield. With both teams unable to break the deadlock, the first half ended scoreless.

Local hero Sebastian Martinez came on as a second-half substitute for Swindon Town and immediately was in the thick of the action. As in their first game against Academy Sporting Club on Sunday evening, Swindon Town took the lead with an opportunistic goal in the 47th minute from their young playmaker Jordan Young who finished off a loose ball following a scramble in the West Bay Select’s six yard box.

Holding on to a slim one goal lead, Swindon Town began playing the possession game spreading the ball around the field. In reply, West Bay pressed the English lads and in the 69th minute were rewarded for their efforts as Steven Rivers equalised with a well-taken effort much to the delight of the home spectators.

With 11 minutes remaining, both teams went in search of the winner but it was not to be. In the 80th minute, referee Gary Whittaker blew his whistle to end an entertaining affair.

The final Swindon Town exhibition match was played on Thursday night against a Bodden Town and George Town select at the TE McField Annex.
