Time Attack shifts back to top gear

Local motorsports enthusiasts can rev their engines up for fresh competition this month.

The Cayman Motorsports Association is starting the 2012 autocross season with its first event. Time Attack resumes its assault on the clock with an event on 26 February.

As usual, the competition is slated to take place at the Progressive Loop in George Town during the afternoon. The association would like to inform the public that in addition to the tried and true events, there will be some new quirks this season. Among them are plans for a multi-car battle format.

Here is the current list of events for the first quarter of 2012. The next two events take place in April with two Time Attack races on the 1st and 29th. From there 20 May sees a “Test and Tune” Day with 27 May witnessing another Time Attack event.

A number of drivers will look to replicate their form from 2011. Bobby Hulse primarily used his Toyota Altezza to win the unlimited division and place second in the unlimited battle group, followed by Keith Tibbetts III (who claimed the unlimited battle) in his Valvoline Subaru Impreza. Ian Tibbetts, in his Chevy Corvette, was third in the unlimited division while George Manderson was third in the unlimited battle.

Jay Reid claimed the all-wheel drive class ahead of Richard Crawshaw and Paul Travers. Jimel McLean was named the most improved driver of the year as he used a number of Honda Civics to win the two-wheel drive class and street battle group. Tom Kirkconnell in his Mazda RX-7 and Ian Charlery in his Mitsubishi Evolution VIII were runners-up in both segments.

Most of those competitors did well in the Al and Jay Bodden Memorial race at the end of the season. Hulse won the unlimited segment and had the fastest time (133.117 seconds). Tibbetts III was second in unlimited and Gary Huggins was third. Ajoni Ambersley won the street class (with a best time of 138.843s). Reid was second and Travers was third.

The announcement of the race schedule comes after the association elected a new executive board. Karyll Iton took over as president, replacing Kim Kirkconnell. Matthew Seales is the new vice president, taking over from Bobby Hulse. Ajoni Ambersley is the new treasurer while Nikko Miller tackles secretary duties. All of the young men now on the board are established local autocross racers.
