Develop our own assets

This year’s American Presidential election will be heatedly contested by the two US political parties. It will test the soul and resolve of the American people. President Obama, who was elected in 2008 as the first African American president, will have a momentous task convincing many white Americans that in spite of having taken out Osama Bin Laden and having paid no attention to black issues, that he is a Christian and not un-American, will overcome these odds and be re-elected.

Obama’s real obstacle is not his lack of defence of liberal economic thinking but the stereotype of African American as un-Americans in spite of the fact that they have time and time again proven their loyalty to the flag of the United States of America, in war and in peace.

The legacy of racism throughout the Western World is simply not understood in America nor the Cayman Islands for that matter, and if understood its ramifications are denied daily in both countries. But Obama will be re-elected because the elite of America wanted him in office in 2009, and will want to retain him to continue promoting the image he has projected to the global community even before 2009. America is a multi-racial, multi-cultural society where each person is allowed to fairly compete for a share of the world’s resources and currencies.

The election of President Obama in 2008 was therefore no fluke; in fact it was a well-planned and executed strategy by the American elite, to which Obama is an integral part. The objective was to recover America’s image abroad as the leader of a global liberal economic market. And these elite are well aware that the majority of the world is made up of non-whites and that military domination of none whites is inferior to economic and technological supremacy. Who therefore is the best salesman for this job; Romney or Obama? Even the name Obama is more of a winner on the international playing field. The Republican Party is now splintered and isolationist because of its core values and leadership. Internally it alienates African Americans, Hispanics and other minority groups who have strong roots in parts of the world where America is re-branding its image as a leader in business not just a leader in interventions and occupations.

For this reason big business cannot at this time entrust them with the leadership of America. Therefore, although Republicans may say there is one America, those on the outside of their narrowly defined ultra conservative white Christian culture know very well that the America of the present Republican Party, which is strongly influenced by Tea Party supporters, is ideologically rooted in the 20th not the 21st Century.

The reality of this century as unacceptable as it may be to some at this time, is that there is a race between China, India and certain other countries on one side and what we have known for centuries as the West, to gain favourable market positions in the emerging consumer markets in the Arab and black African nations, which not only possess a large share of the world’s natural resources but the world’s future consumer markets. Making these countries into consumer markets rather than sources of cheap raw materials is the new American world strategy, which also encompasses their real national security interest.

I have always had a love for the study of history and politics and I wished more of our politicians did also. Because if they did, the past PPM government would have taken note of the possible severity of the present global meltdown and the present UDP government would be paying more attention to our economic projections as seen by the United Kingdom government and their concerns about the sustainability of our Caymanian society.

The Premier should stop and analyse just how Obama’s insourcing policies will affect our ability to grow our financial sector over the next five years. The old assumption that a democratic government will create economic opportunities for tax havens because the rich will run from taxes could very well be a thing of the past.

The present political leadership in this country needs to pay more attention to the task of reducing the size of our government and our expectations before it is too late. They need to legalise casino gambling and really get into the tourism business and stop running up and down looking for high worth individuals to invest in God only knows what! Our economic future, if we are to have one after two consecutive terms of government mismanagement, will depend upon developing our own natural assets rather than hoping to continue pillaging those of other nations.

  1. Frank…

Now you’re saying something that I’m finally listening to.

Much of what you say here has the uncontestable ring of truth to it…for those who have the capacity to analyse global political and economic trends.

But…unfortunately, you could not expect someone of barely a high school educational level, if that much, to have that capacity, now could you ?

The crux of the Caymanian political culture is that it is geared to function on the lowest denominating factor, which is the emotional triggers of a largely insular, unexposed local populace, although that has changed rapidly in the last few years, with a younger, much more educated and exposed percentage of the population growing by the day and raising children in their own modes.

The days when the ‘old school’ local politician could come and influence Caymanians based on loyalties to ‘daddie and mamie’, who were their friends and would expect loyalty to their leadership and policies based on that alone are swiftly passing.

Hopefully, so are the days when a bottle of rum, a carton of cigarrettes and promise of a job, ‘if you wote for me’ is passing as well.

You only have to look at the current govt, where the most qualified financial professional amongst the lot, an experienced CPA, is minister of education and labour, not the minister of finance…that says it all.

As you are calling for, it will take the best financial minds in the country to pool their brainpower to derive methods of developing Cayman’s resources into viable assets that belong to Cayman, and for the people of Cayman.

I have absolutely no problem with the Dart corporation; I have good friends who work for Dart who I’ve known even before Dart ever came to Cayman; I’m speaking of Dart’s engineers who pre-date Dart in working in Cayman from the early 90s, for CUC.

Dart’s excellence in the quality of their projects and work is not in question;neither do I question their integrity, as it has not been disproved as yet.

But, for Cayman to put all its eggs in Dart’s basket is taking a risk that no responsible country should take…

Your letter is food for thought that I hope the political leadership will take note of.

  2. Amen!

lets hope all those aspiring to a political career
reads the above article in case they too hope to continue the practice of holding hands with Dart for him to drop money in the public coffers or maybe their own pockets. Its sickening and is proof that we have elected people that have no financial projection ability to grow the economy.

Caymanians have become 3rd class citizens under this UDP government they are Indians on a reservations being thrown the crumbs of clean up jobs twice a year, Easter and Christmas, and the remainder of the year they watch X-pats fly past them in their SUV’s, blessed with a job in a nice Air conditioned office, living in a high rise condo, then at evening time those foreign corporate elite or foreign laborers walk by unemployed Caymanians walking their dogs on South Sound Road, while Rolston Anglin boosts their snobbish ego by telling that caymanians are unemployable. That’s the best that the Minister for Labor and Education can pull from under his hat for the people of Cayman.

It is clear, One man One Vote to avoid this political Train Wreck being repeated.
As its time to elect people that will represent the people, and work for the people instead of big business.

Its time to sober up and vote for an Independent leader this time around neither of these two political parties have proven to be fiscally responsible.

  3. Obama is the worst president in history, bush is only second to that.

Want to argue. For the last 100 years the president has ALWAYS had an inauguration speech. After 180 days in office, the president tells the country what he’s done so far, and what he plans to do next.

OBAMA is the first president, in those 100 years. To NOT have an inauguration speech.

Want to know why, cause he’s a DO NOTHING president.

    He does absolutely nothing.

We all know why he got voted in. First time ever that a certain high percentage of a certain minority actually went out an voted.

He has put the country another 4 trillion in debt this year alone. Basically, he’s almost collapse the financial aspect of the US.

Obama is the worst president ever.

And if you do not believe me, google that phrase above.

There is so much more Obama has NOT done. It’s appalling.

He will not get in a second term. That much is obvious.
