Hospice Care holds 12th annual Flag Day Weekend

Cayman HospiceCare is gearing up to hold its 12th annual Flag Day Weekend on 9-10 March.

The event, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, will see more than 150 hospice care volunteers blanket Grand Cayman at strategic, high traffic locations, encouraging passersby to make a donation.

Volunteers will be visible, wearing bright green event T-shirts.

DMS will kick the fundraising activities off on Friday morning in downtown George Town. Volunteers will then take the helm on Friday afternoon and throughout the day on Saturday.

Jennifer Grant-McCarthy, operations and fundraising manager for Cayman HospiceCare, said that while the event is an important fundraiser, it is also about raising awareness.

“It’s as much about the funds as it is about raising awareness and letting the community know we exist,” she said. “Through this fundraiser we aim to reach out to everyone.”

It costs more than $1,700 a day to run Cayman HospiceCare and the Flag Day Weekend typically raises in the region of $20,000 – enough to run the organisation for just under two weeks.

“We are encouraging everyone to donate whatever they can afford,” Ms Grant-McCarthy said. “It really all does add up.”

In addition to asking members of the public to dig deep, Cayman HospiceCare is also calling out for volunteers for the upcoming event.

Two-hour shift times are available at strategic points throughout Grand Cayman.
