Gaza’s hit rate was amazing

This season’s Cayman Islands Football Premier League campaign was overall the most fascinating for years. Mirroring the English Premier League, the champions were not decided until on the final day of the season when Elite who led for virtually the whole season, faltered when it mattered most, drew with George Town 2-2 and Scholars International nipped in to beat Future 3-0 to win the title by two points.

Scholars hoped to go through the whole league season, but like Elite lost only once, surprisingly to Tigers a couple of months ago. Elite’s only loss came at the start of the season, way back in September, to Roma United.

At least Elite can boast having the league’s top scorer in Dwayne ‘Gaza’ Wright who knocked in 19 goals. Considering the season ran for 21 games and Gaza missed a few, plus he played through injury through most of the second half of the season, that is a phenomenal return.

Bodden Town’s Yefry Calderon is a defender yet he managed to knock in 13 goals, mostly from set pieces. Miguel Simms was the league’s next best marksman, with 12 for Tigers. Elite’s Alex Belcher was next with 10 and then on nine was Mark Ebanks, occasional Scholars captain and GT’s accomplished midfielder Fabian Malcolm.

Bodden Town were third in the league on 42 points, only six points behind Scholars. George Town were fourth on 34 points, then came Tigers on 23 and Cayman Athletic on 17. Roma were seventh on 11 points and Future were relegated with 8 points. Future’s Paul Brown kept their hopes alive for the first half of the season and he bravely plugged on, scoring a commendable eight.
