More than 150 residents of Cayman Brac turned out at a health expo hosted by the Cayman Islands Cancer Society and the Cayman Heart Fund.
The organisations offered free medical screenings to attendees and more than 65 people availed of those.
At the expo, held on Saturday, 21 April at the Alexander Hotel, Dr. Sook Yin, medical director of the Cayman Heart Fund, gave an informative presentations on “BRCA” – the Breast Cancer Gene – and “Women and Heart Disease” and Victoria Anderson-Gray of the Cayman Islands Cancer Society gave a talk on colorectal cancer.
The following day, residents took part in the Cayman Islands Cancer Society Stride and Heart walk held from the Alexander Hotel to the Brac Reef Resort Hotel and back. Afterward, participants were treated to breakfast and prizes, including free cardiac and cancer screenings at the Seven Mile Medical Clinic in Grand Cayman, courtesy of Dr. Yin.
“In addition to meeting all these great people and providing them with valuable information about their health, two other big goals were accomplished during this Brac Attack. In the past, women had to come to Grand Cayman to utilise our free pap voucher programme, but now, thanks to details worked out during this visit, we are now able to offer our pap vouchers to women in the Brac.
“Additionally, we were able to officially meet with Ms Connie Godet and establish her as Cancer Society’s liaison in the Brac. These are good things for people in the Brac and for the Cancer Society,” said Jennifer Weber of the Cancer Society.
She added: “The weekend events in Cayman Brac were extraordinary and a lot of fun for the organisation’s staff, volunteers and residents. CICS and CHF would like to extend our heartfelt thank you to Faith Hospital, Dr. Bonigi, Dr. Palmer, Connie Godet, volunteer nurses, staff of Alexander Hotel, Lions and Rotaract Club of Cayman Brac, the residents of Cayman Brac and the many volunteers who helped make the weekend a great success.”
