After all the excitement of the Cayman Invitational, local athletes get their own chance to perform at the Truman Bodden track this weekend.
The Cayman Islands Athletic Association hosts the annual World Athletics Day meet on Saturday, starting at 9am. World Athletics Day began in 1996 and this year marks the 17th staging of this worldwide festival of youth in track and field and has attracted 158 IAAF member federations to take part.
The aim of the World Athletics Day is to firmly establish an important link between the youth, sport and environmental conservation.
This meet is open to all schools, clubs and individuals and also serves as a qualifier for athletes preparing for upcoming regional and international competitions at the youth, junior and senior levels.
With the Cayman Invitational meet just passed, the association expects to attract a large turnout of enthusiastic athletes inspired by seeing the likes of Yohan Blake, Carmelita Jeter and Cydonie Mothersill in action.
Events being contested for World Athletics Day are 100 metres hurdles, 110m hurdles, 80m, 100m, 150m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, javelin and ball throw. Age groups eligible to compete are: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-17 and over 17.
Athletes are vying to qualify for the Central America and Caribbean Junior Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador from 29 June 29- 1 July 1. After that it’s the North America, Central America and Caribbean Under-23 Championships in Guanajuato, Mexico from 6-8 July 6-8, then the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain from 10-15 July 10 and finally the Caribbean Union of Teachers Games in Nassau Bahamas from 27-28 July 27.
