Weekender has been looking forward to this day for literally years – the establishment of an adult steel pan class.
The course is under the tutelage of the legendary Earl La Pierre, who was instrumental (yes, pun intended), in introducing this brilliant instrument to Cayman. Earl is a good pal of all things pan and simply a genius performer so we’re going to be learning from the best. We asked Glen Inanga of the University College of the Cayman Islands about what people can get from learning this awesome instrument.
“An opportunity to learn the ropes on this intrument which is almost synonymous with the Caribbean. This will be a lot of fun too as it will be in the context of playing in a band comprising class participants. It is a highly accessible and versatile musical instrument for many people and is part of what making music in the Caribbean is all about,” Glen tells us.
Fun for everyone
And don’t worry if you have not played an instrument before or not for ages – this really is for beginners as much as it is for people interested in broadening their musical knowledge.
Simply head to the university’s administration office to register for the classes.
It costs $125 for the seven classes, which start on Monday, 14 May and run for seven weeks between 6 and 8pm – but please note that due to national holidays classes will take place on Tuesday, 22 May, Tuesday, 5 June and Tuesday, 19 June.
