Home Gas burning for more props

Co-ed softball is officially reaching its climax.

A trio of championship games are taking place this week in the Cayman Islands Little League 2012 Winter Adult Co-ed Softball League. George Town’s Field of Dreams facility will serve as venue.

Monday, 14 May, sees Coors Light Chuggers battle KPMG A for the AA/division two crown at 8.15pm on field four. On Tuesday, 15 May, Bradley Robinson and the Butterfield Legion of Boom tussle with Ryan Ebanks, Baron Solomon and Home Gas for the AAA/division one title at 8.15pm on field four. Deloitte fights for the A/division three championship on Wednesday, 16 May, at 8.15pm on field three.

League coordinator Alan Markoff states the most intrigue is in the top flight.

“The division one title is a battle of the two division powerhouses,” Markoff said. “Home Gas has won many titles, but didn’t even make it to the championship game last season. Butterfield made it to last season’s championship, but lost in a close game to KM Ltd. This is a game that could go either way. Home Gas defeated Butterfield 11-6 early in the regular season, but lost 14-8 later on.

“Last week in the third round winner’s bracket game, Butterfield defeated Home Gas 16-3, so I guess Butterfield has the edge as far as momentum goes. It’s always tough to win three in a row against a good opponent, but if Butterfield brings it’s A game, I think they will do it. I know from experience though, Home Gas is a team that can really capitalize on defensive errors if you make them.”

This week’s championship matches come after the D/division four finale last Thursday. The Harbour House Marina Whalers defeated team HSBC 12-5. The Whalers came in as the underdog after finishing last in their group while HSBC were the regular season winners.

Aside from the Whalers’ run, Markoff states the playoffs have seen few surprises.

“The play-offs have gone pretty much as predicted. There were some early upsets, but in a double elimination tournament, the cream usually rises to the top and there are few surprises. The top two teams are playing for the division one championship. In division two, the top seed will play for the title, in division three, the top seed will play in the championship game. Only in the D league, where the number four seed advanced to the championship against the number one seed, was there a major surprise.”
