As All-Stars netball club chase playoff glory, the side is appreciative of the journey to this point.
All-Stars is one of the oldest participating clubs in the Cayman Islands Netball Association. In recent years, the team has ended their seasons in second place. The association 2011-2012 open league saw the club restructure the A and B sides.
Joining the A team, sponsored by Central Cooling, were new faces such as Katherine Maw, Teneisha Wilson, Tashena Parks and Lisa Kemp. Karen Smith-James, Jane Sinclair, Leslie Bernard and returning player Charlotte Shepheard joined the B squad, sponsored by Cayman National Bank.
Over the past 12 months, the teams embarked on a rigorous training schedule under the coaching skills of Nicola Hunter (nee Williams). They finished their regular season campaigns with two top place finishes at second and fourth alongside frontrunners Roma A and Rising Stars A. As a result, All-Stars were the only club in the competition to have two squads finishing in the top four, which results in a chance to compete for the national championship.
Club president Lyneth Monteith spoke about this year’s form at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts.
“Both teams place in the top four and whilst competition is stiff, the club is aiming for top placements,” Monteith said. “The season’s competition has shown that the skill level between the top teams are quite narrow and the end result usually comes down to the club making the least mistakes and the team scoring the most goals.
“This is not a season where any one team will walk over any other team but the championship is wide open. Some teams have a distinct advantage in the shooting areas but this is not always the decider in winning the games, rather the entire team effort will make the difference. All-Stars is working hard to have that total team effort and unity. As the playoffs continue, this will certainly be put to the test.”
All-Stars will continue developing the skills of the team in the off-season with an overseas tour. The club has embarked on several fundraisers to make this a reality. The next fundraiser is a funday scheduled for Monday, 21 May from 10am to 4pm at the Smith Road Oval in George Town.
