The LIME 800 metres open water sea swim was a historic one this year as it was the 25th anniversary of the communications company backing it.
In the race from Governor’s Beach to Public Beach, Geoffrey Butler maintained his dominance on Saturday, winning in 9 minutes 54 seconds, six seconds ahead of Alex McCallum who came in ahead of Geoff’s brother Simon (10.14). Alex’s brother Iain was fourth in 10.27.
First female was Coral Tomascik (10.57), seventh overall. Ashley Theaker was eighth and second female, ahead of Catriona Macrae in ninth place.
First adult was Andrew Smilley in fifth place, followed by Darren Mew, the Olympic swimmer from the United Kingdom who now coaches here.
This was a turn out of masters specially for the occasion. Jim Fraser represented the Olympic family – his sons Shaune and Brett are heading for the London Olympics in July.
Frankie Flowers entered, as preparation for his Flowers One Mile Swim on 9 June. Larry Walters is back fter a long break. Victor Thompson is keeping his good times going, Penny McDowell is training for the Flowers event, Barb Pedersen maintains her good form, Lyn Bodden is back in competition and it was nice to see swimmers over 70 in there, Bev Mosser and Herb Cohen.
Of the very young, aged eight and under, their numbers included Marisa Poole, Amber Barnes, Lara Humphries and Lachlin Lambert.
LIME celebrated their 25 years of sponsorship with a cake and a draw for on iPhone which Andrew Smilley won. LIME were really appreciative of all the volunteers for helping to make it another successful sea swim.
