Killa back after illness

Charles ‘The Killa’ Whittaker returns to training this week after recovering from pneumonia over the Easter weekend.

The IBF junior-middleweight No.2 will step up his training as he regains full fitness for a fight in the fall, hopefully against the winner of the bout between IBF champion Cornelius Bundrage and challenger Cory Spinks on 30 June.

Whittaker’s rep Raul Alvarez who is based in Florida, will enter negotiations immediately after the fight to either meet the winner or be matched with another top ranked challenger for the winner to become the IBF’s No.1. The No.1 fighter automatically gets to fight for the championship. Either way, Killa is set for the biggest fight of his career after years of being marginalised.

“I just hope that there isn’t a draw or a controversial ending like an accidental head clash where the IBF orders a rematch between Bundrage and Spinks,” said Whittaker. “I’m likely to fight in September and would love to promote it here in the Cayman Islands.”

If a contest with either Bundrage or Spinks cannot be made, Whittaker hopes not to be matched with someone from Europe because he feels there are too many hometown decisions there. “I’ve seen so many bad decisions in Europe, places like England, Germany and Denmark. Some of the worse. Fighters like Richard Hall, Arthur Abraham and a heavyweight called Garing Lane have been robbed in Europe.

“European fighters don’t have to go to America so much to make a lot of money. The Klitschkos stay in Germany and sell out soccer stadiums with 60,000 people. Going to Europe is no fun. It goes all the way back to when Marvin Hagler won the world title in London in 1980. He got pelted with bottles and garbage in the ring.”
