Miss Jackie’s School of Dance will be celebrating 40 years in 2013, an impressive achievement for any business. How many of us remember being children in her classes? I for one recall learning my positions at the barre, and playing a tiger lily in one of her productions at the town hall. Who knows? Maybe I would have become a prima ballerina if I hadn’t ended up so … tall.
Mrs. Jackie Balls’ skills and love of the performing arts introduced ballet training to the Cayman Islands in the 1970s, and she is still teaching today. Her repertoire has expanded to include a wide range of dance styles including jazz, tap, modern and Zumba – a fitness craze that has swept the world. She is one of the most recognised faces in Grand Cayman, and the odds are good that if you are 40 or younger, you have either attended her classes or your children have.
On Saturday, 26 May the school is holding an open house to give children from age 3 to 18 an opportunity to experience the world of dance for themselves. No previous skill is necessary, and everyone is welcome to come along. Miss Jackie wants to encourage the younger generation to get up and move. Dancing is an excellent form of exercise without it feeling like your standard workout. Why do you think Zumba is so popular? Tired of the same old treadmill and weights, adults are looking for fun ways to burn off the calories and improve muscle tone. Why walk when you can dance?
With obesity in children becoming a more prevalent concern, it is more important than ever to get them involved in physical activity. Dancing ain’t just for girls! This Saturday you can bring your young ones along to sign up for a mini-workshop. The youngest children are scheduled for the morning, and the older ones in the afternoon. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for the September term and ask questions about the different classes on offer.
Although leotards are perfect for the girls and T-shirts and shorts for the boys, so long as they wear clothes they can easily move in, it’s fine for the open house day.
