It’s all about the love of art at the National Gallery – whether you want to create it, or simply admire others’ creations.
And because of this the gallery is constantly hosting art-related activities, making art accessible to everyone. In addition to the news Founded Upon the Seas temporary exhibition which opens this month, there’s a colourful calendar of classes and events being organised throughout June.
Family Fun
Saturday mornings are family fun days for NGCI members, and parents can attend a drop in session with their kids every week. The gallery provides the materials, you provide the imagination. 9 to 10am.
CineClub
Every second and fourth Monday of the month, CineClub offers movie buffs the opportunity to get together and enjoy some foreign art films. The series is a showing of Roman Polanski films, from his debut feature Knife in the Water to his latest movie The Ghost Writer. Admission is $5 and refreshments are available by donation. 7 to 9pm.
CineClub also takes place on Cayman Brac and this Saturday, 2 June there will be a screening of Travellers and Magicians.
Painting Outdoors
Taking inspiration directly from one’s surroundings lends a whole new dimension to paintings. Cayman Brac residents meet weekly for an outdoor painting session led by Simone Scott. Visitors are welcome to join in for a $10 fee. Venues change weekly, so get in contact to find out where they will meet next. 9 to 10am.
A number of the workshops run by the gallery can also be attended on a drop in basis for those that cannot commit to every week.
Live Studio Night
On Thursday evenings throughout June there will be a Live Studio night, accompanied by wine and music. Art enthusiasts can practice sketching or painting live models as they hold poses and make use of props. No instruction is provided at these sessions. 7 to 9pm.
Still Life
On Tuesday mornings in June Eme Paschalides will be leading still life classes, providing guidance as needed, rather than formal instruction. The sessions run from 9.30am to 12.30pm and drops ins are welcome to paint or draw. $35.
Sketching for Life
Renowned local artist John Broad will teach various techniques for sketching quickly to produce dynamic pictures. Participants can drop in on Monday evenings in June from 7 to 8.30pm and practice sketching. $25.
Art Sisters
Led by Lorna Reid these lively but cosy classes for women turn the camaraderie that is generated into creativity. Saturday mornings 11am to 12.30pm.
