Mobile voting goes ‘like clockwork’

Early voting in the “one man, one vote” referendum is going like clockwork, Supervisor of Elections Kearney Gomez said yesterday. The process known as mobile voting began on Friday in Little Cayman and will continue through tomorrow. 

Voters had to apply in advance for mobile voting and the 344 who did are primarily police officers and people who will be staffing the polling stations on Referendum Day, 18 July. Also eligible for mobile voting were people who are unable to go to the polls because of illness or infirmity, in which case mobile teams are visiting their homes. 

Mobile voting took place in Cayman Brac, North Side and East End on Monday. Voters in Bodden Town could visit the referendum trailer at the James M. Bodden Civic Centre on Tuesday. 

Today, Wednesday, the voting trailer is outside the Elections Office at 150 Smith Road. Tomorrow, Thursday, it will be outside the John A. Cumber School Hall in West Bay. Mobile voting hours are 9am to 1pm, with home visits taking place until 6pm. 

This scheduling allows an extra day on Friday for home visits, if necessary. The deadline to apply for mobile voting was last Friday, 6 July. 

Each mobile voting ballot box slot will be locked in a closed position at the end of voting; the boxes will be securely stores and then unlocked on 18 July with the rest of the ballot boxes from each district’s polling stations.
