Women footballers from the Cayman Islands are doing extremely well in the teams they have joined abroad which means their development will continue to raise the standard of the already highly acclaimed national team.
Briana Hydes is at South Wesleyan University. She won her first game and played particularly well in the 4-2 victory over Point University.
Shanice Monteith and Jessica Ebanks are at West Florida University. Monteith scored her first college goal in their 2-0 win over Mount Olive.
Courtisha Ebanks has won all three games at South Georgia College, including a 1-0 historic win over the celebrated Daron College, their first time ever. Ebanks was the goalkeeper and she made amazing saves.
She said: “I’m very happy and dedicating this victory to all people in Cayman. All people that worked with me days and nights and my family.
“I’ve played already a large number of International games for the Cayman Islands national team and it was a privilege and honour to play for my country. Today, I have a lot of experience and it’s all in my favour.
“Our goalkeeper was injured last week. I was the first one to tell the coach that I can play in goal. I want to defend my team colours and I will do that because I had a lot of people in Cayman helping me to reach where I’m today. I’m representing my Island and I will go to my limits for that.”
Shenel Gall is with Swiss side Neunkirch who won their first Coppa Svizzera Cup game. She played against FC Bülach and Gall’s Neunkirch won 4-0. They have won their first three league games as well and are top of the Switzerland National B League.
Gisele Johnson is playing in Florence, Alabama for the Barry Buccaneers. They got rained out playing the North Alabama Lions on Sunday, but not before jumping out to a 2-0 lead after 19 minutes.
Chelsea Greene and Shanelle Frederick are at Montverde Academy in Florida. They’ve started pre-season training and games start next month.
Chelsea Brown is at Rabun Gap Nacoochee School in Georgia and will start pre-season soon and the league starts next month as well.
Kimberly Rivers is at Abraham Baidwin College in Georgia and has won all her games and scored twice in three games.
Brilliant keeper Emily Kelly is at Richmond College and in their last game they beat Villanova 3-1.
Thiago Cunha, technical director of women’s football in the Cayman Islands, deserves a lot of credit for guiding these women through their formative years in football. He said: “All of them are doing very good and the colleges are winning games. I’m very happy.
“ThEse girls worked very hard for years to reach where they are now. It’s like a movie in my head. I see all of them still 10 years old. Amazing.”
