Many bars and restaurants in Cayman are reporting a significant increase in business during the World Cup.

Fidel Murphy’s bartender Rob Fletcher said when the games are on, they bring in every single member of staff, “It has been crazy busy. When the England games are on it gets insane inside here. The atmosphere is electric. The place is so full you can barely stand up in here. Everyone is just really excited for the matches.”

Alvaro Quintas, owner of XQs on West Bay Road, said the restaurant and lounge is having the best June since it opened 15 years ago, “The fact that it was happening in the Americas made the timing of the games more conducive for customers to watch the games. We also offered specials and organised ourselves well, ensuring our televisions were working perfectly for the matches.”

Alex McClenaghan of Salty’s Sport’s Bar at Grand Harbour said the World Cup had been very good for business, as did Sean Reid, owner of Sand Bar in George Town. Reid added, “Yes, it has been positive for us, and we did some events that also gave us a bump.”

Lloyd’s Smoke House bartender Tyler Blanc said, “It’s been a really good atmosphere. It is great to see how this sport brings people together”.

Tibor Kozma, a manager at Legend’s told the Compass that he has also seen business increase during the World Cup, adding, “I would definitely say the English games have been the most popular, along with Columbia and Brazil, but since England is still in the World Cup, that has been beneficial for the business and the company.”

In West Bay, at The Brixton, Matt Tanner said the establishment has had a great following from football fans from all 48 nations. “It has been amazing. We are getting people from many different nationalities coming together for these games, it has been awesome. We have had big crowds for all the games, but the England crowd has been the best for us. So, I am rooting for England to get through to the final,” said Brixton.

At Kelly’s Bar in West Bay, football fan Sean Clarke said, “All the matches are being shown at Kelly’s and it has been really busy. “It’s a cultural vibe and a lot of the current and former West Bay football players are coming along to watch the games here, and it has been a loving and respectful atmosphere. It is the place to be for the World Cup,” he said.
