A chance to get fighting fit

Are you fighting fit? If not, do you want to be?

Muay Thai, a Thai form of kickboxing is pretty much guaranteed to get you there – regular practice will result in cardiovascular gains, weight loss, increased agility, flexibility, speed and confidence.

Whether you’re already a practitioner or want to find out what it’s all about, the Muay Thai seminar being led by world champion Mikey Perez, this Saturday, 15 September, is an event not to be missed.

The seminar runs from 3 to 5.30pm at the Rogue Gym on West Bay Road and those who attend will be able to meet and train with Mikey. It’s designed for all skill levels and another amateur champ, Poo Choi Bruce Ong will also be flying to Cayman to assist with the seminar.

Muay Thai is being taught regularly (four times per week) at the Rogue Gym. Resident instructor Grey Brett explains that it’s both a martial art and a fun but intense workout.

“Muay Thai differs from other forms of kickboxing as it utilises not only kicks and punches but also knees, elbows and stand up grappling (clinch) and sweeps and throws,” Grey says. “Muay Thai can be approached as self defence as it is a very effective, no nonsense martial art, but at its root the training is geared toward competing in the ring.”

That doesn’t mean, however, that you have to compete. However, if you do want to, there is also a “smoker” planned for 29 September, where fighters from Rogue Gym will be competing and testing their skills.
