Alzheimer’s Day scheduled for this week

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, with Friday, 21 September being World Alzheimer’s Day.

To mark the occasion and to help raise awareness of the disease, Friday is a corporate dress down day in which members of the public are being asked to wear purple and make a donation of $5 to the recently formed Alzheimer’s and Dementia Association of the Cayman Islands.

All funds raised from the dress down donations or any other corporate donations will go to help fund planned awareness and educational campaigns and to assist people living in the Cayman Islands with Alzheimer’s – whether as financial assistance to purchase supplies and provide training or respite for a carer.

The association has also joined forces with Camana Bay and Books & Books and will have an information booth on The Paseo at Camana Bay on Friday, 21 September, from 5 to 8pm and on Saturday, 22 September, from 10am to 2pm. Visitors to Camana Bay can stop by the booth to learn more about Alzheimer’s and the association.

Caregivers will find a selection of useful guides at Books & Books, and on Friday and Saturday, the bookstore will donate 10 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of these guides to the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Association.

The theme for this year’s World Alzheimer’s Month is “Dementia: Living together”, during which Alzheimer’s associations across the world have been focusing their activities on reducing the stigma associated with dementia and making communities more dementia-friendly by offering a range of programmes and events.

On Thursday night, there will also be a presentation about dementia and a carers’ supper at the Hibiscus Conference Room at Cayman Islands Hospital.
