The Cayman Islands Scouts Association is one step closer to establishing a permanent home.
On Saturday, 15 September, scouts and volunteers turned out to watch the demolition of the building on Middle Road in George Town, near Chrissie Tomlinson Memorial Hospital, where the new headquarters will stand.
Some 300 boys and young men, ages 6 to 20, are enrolled as scouts. The organisation, which occupies a trailer in Prospect in Grand Cayman, has raised some $400,000 toward the new building through appeals to former scouts and the parents of scouts. It is seeking about $550,000 to finish the project.
Previously, the building on Middle Road served as a group home for the Cayman Islands Department of Children and Family Services, and has also housed various public sector administrative offices, including the scout office at one time. It was severely damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, after which it fell out of use.
