The Public Health Department has confirmed one new case of dengue fever during its latest update on the outbreak, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Cayman Islands to 43.
The new confirmed case involved a patient who contracted dengue in September last year.
Three new suspected cases were under investigation during the week of 24 February to 2 March, with samples from the patients being sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency laboratory in Trinidad and Tobago. None of the three patients showing symptoms of dengue had travelled off island. One is a resident of George Town and two are from West Bay.
Since the outbreak started last September, 139 cases have been investigated – 43 were positive for dengue, 86 were negative, four were inconclusive and the results of six are pending.
Of the 43 confirmed cases, 31 had no travel history and are believed to have contracted dengue in Cayman. Four of the patients confirmed to have dengue are from Bodden Town, six are from George Town and 33 are from West Bay.
