‘AJ’ races to Autoshowoff podium

A number of drivers earned accolades during the recent Cayman’s Grand Autoshowoff.

Justin Thompson, in a BMW M6, and Shem Tibbetts, in a Hyundai Genesis, won the “Best Island Import” class. In the “Best Island Domestic” category, the winners were Linda Dacosta’s orange convertible Chevrolet Camaro and Kody Miller’s black Ford Ranger, with all custom work done by Miller.

Alexander “AJ” Conolly’s 2003 Mitsubishi Evolution and Allan Foster’s 1975 Datsun 280 topped the “Super Street Legal” class and RedNeck Custom and a white Suzuki Hayabusa topped the “Best Motorbike” group.

Organisers put together a race category just for fun, with the top rides being Rohelio Wright’s Saxon-sponsored Chevrolet Camaro and Bobby Hulse’s Toyota Altezza.

The automotive show took place at Seven Mile Shops on West Bay Road on 3 March, featuring dozens of rides and hundreds of enthusiasts. Some of the notable machines were a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti and a Honda CBR 1100XX. Local racers such as Gary Huggins, Jody Jervis and Dante “Ross” Hydes were also present.

The main organisers were Michael Webster (through his company MJ Entertainment), Shelby Carlos (Boknology Inc. and Carlos and Martin’s Tex-Mex Cantina) and Shane Ebanks (Premium Touch Auto and Marine Detailing). Webster said the presence of local racers made a big difference.

“Special thanks to a few of the Cayman Motorsports Association guys for showing off their cars,” Webster said. “Bobby in the Altezza, Marcus Huggins/Gary Huggins in their 1984 Toyota Starlet and, of course, one of our main sponsors Wayne Kirkconnell, with his Automotive Art Nissan 350Z.

“I thank everyone that brought their cars out,” he added. “Some brought two, three and four of their own cars. Thank you all for making it happen. The day ended up very nice, not too hot and not too cold.”

For entertainment, Christian La Pena and Jay De La Vega served as live disc jockeys. While the bikini contest did not happen, Maggie Greenwood and Kristin Amaya created smiles as part of the Liquid Nitro crew.

Webster said the next event should see more pretty ladies.

“Even though we didn’t have a bikini contest this time, I’d like to thank Tom Kirkconnell of Automotive Art for supplying the flat bed truck for the stage. Maybe next time we can raise the cash prize to $500 to $1,000 to get some hot girls showing off their bikinis.

“I’d like to thank all the sponsors: Automotive Art, Napa, Tony’s Toys, Saxon, Dms, Fito’s Auto Body, Carlos and Martin’s and Liquid Nitro. Special thanks to Premium Touch for bringing most of the high-end cars. Also, I’d like to thank the judges and Luigi Moxam of Cayman Screen Print for rushing the Liquid Nitro/Boknology Inc T-shirts. Hopefully next time we can get more to give out.

“Look how the day played out, we put together an awesome show, some cars didn’t show but that’s OK,” he said. “We had the parking lot filled with cars, sponsors and tons of people. I look forward to doing the next show some time this summer and possibly some show and shines during the coming months.”
