Esso fuelled to repeat

The Esso Blazers can officially start a title defence.

Esso are one of four teams taking part in the Cayman Islands Basketball Association 2013 National Men’s League. Games take place on Sundays from 5pm at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre.

The Blazers were expected to play their season opener last Sunday against the Dominos Warriors, the 2011 champions. A pair of teams making their returns after a brief hiatus, the Silver Bullets and George Town Sports Club, were slated to play in the nightcap. League action continues this Sunday, 17 March, with Esso facing George Town at 5pm and Silver Bullets tackling Dominos at 6.45pm.

Many of the familiar names in the sport will be on display. Esso are led by veterans Perry Levy, Kevin Maxwell and Jasen Campbell; Dominos feature Collin Anglin, Borislav Djordjic and Rotando Thompson; Silver Bullets boast Redver Ebanks, Chad Leslie and Curtis Wilson and George Town sport Peter Grant, Miguel Pitta and Eckerd McField.

Esso has bragging rights to begin the season after winning the 2012 crown. The Blazers claimed their first national championship in the club’s 14-year existence with a two-game sweep of Dominos, thanks to Samuel O’Garro, 24, averaging 14.5 points and 10 rebounds.
