F1 fans help hungry

Formula 1 racing resumes Sunday in Australia and the Formula 1 Fans of the Cayman Islands group will return to its old venue of Lone Star Bar & Grill to watch the races, while also raising money for a worthy charity – Meals On Wheels. 

The race is in Melbourne at the regular viewing time of 9am.  

A donation of $2 is asked of all in attendance to go to Meals On Wheels, which was recently in the news for not being able to provide as many elderly housebound people with food as before due to a lack of resources. The donation provides attendees with a free coffee and entry into a door prize contest.  

Prizes in the past have included airline tickets to Miami, hotel stays, gift vouchers and restaurant meals. The money raised will be used to support other charities during the year. 

The races are generally not live, but in the spirit of the club, everyone watches without first looking up the results.  

Club organiser Danny Roach is a huge Ferrari fan, so he undoubtedly has hopes Fernando Alonso will regain the title he won in 2005 and 2006. Alonso came close to claiming the crown last season from Sebastian Vettel, who is vying for his fourth consecutive championship.  

“All races will be viewed at the regular time of 9am on race Sundays, with the exceptions of the Montreal, Austin and Sao Paulo Grand Prix, which we will view live, with individual times to be announced on our Facebook page, Formula 1 Fans of the Cayman Islands, which I encourage all of you to join,” Roach said. “Meals On Wheels said that they also supply food bank type grocery items to their clients, so it is not just hot meals which they deliver. 

“They need food and other donations such as canned vegetables and toiletries as well as cash,” he said. “We encourage our members and marketing partners to help in any way they can.”
