Get up and dress in as much purple as you can muster on Saturday morning. It’s the Honouring Women 5K walk and run, organised by the Family Resource Centre and your participation helps fund some important programmes.
It’s the 15th year that the fun run and walk has been held, coinciding with Honouring Women Month in March, but there are a few new things this year.
One is the “Colour Me Purple” theme: walkers and runners are encouraged to wear as much purple as possible as it’s the colour associated with International Women’s Day. It’s also a colour often linked to nobility, passion and creativity – all of which fits perfectly with honouring women, says Miriam Foster, of the Family Resource Centre.
As the new bypass extension is now open and the old route via the Yacht Club no longer available, this year the walk and run will begin from two separate locations – Smith Cove and Kaibo.
It’s going to be a fun walk and a serious run this year, and for the first time runners will be officially timed, divided into age groups, and awarded medals.
For walkers it will be an educational experience, with signs along the route where they will be able to read statistics about women and girls, and tips for raising girls.
At the end of the 5K route, a light breakfast will be served – at no charge to participants – and a raffle will be drawn.
Money raised through this event will help to support programmes offered by the Family Resource Centre for women, such as the Young Parents Services, which assists young mothers to acquire the skills they need both to raise children and to find and keep a job, as well as the Domestic Violence Intervention Programme.
Honouring Women Month was declared in 1999 and is a time to focus on women, their achievements in the field of equality and the work that remains to be done.
It’s $15 to register and that includes a T-shirt, bag and breakfast. A prize will be awarded for the participant wearing the most purple and all participants will be entered in a raffle.
Walkers will set off at 6.30am and runners at 7am.
