In spite of a lackluster start, Redver Ebanks feels Welly’s Cool Spot’s ladies team will finish strong on the court.
Ebanks serves as head coach for the Cool Spot, the reigning national women’s champions. Welly’s have started out 1-2 in the 2014 Women’s Triangular Series, put on by the Cayman Islands Basketball Association. The nine-round competition is already into week five and Ebanks said the talent is there for another championship run.
“I’d urge the public to come out and watch Welly’s go back-to-back seasons with championships,” Ebanks said. “I’m feeling confident. We have the talent for the most part as many of the same girls came back. We lost Rochel Gardener to track, April Ebanks is in Walsingham Academy and she won’t come back until the end.
“It’s the same team, but better. They have one year of experience and came back improved. You have to remember, they were 14/15 last year and they will have grown physically as well as mentally by now. Like I said, they are the same team but better.”
The Cool Spot are in action on Thursday against the Wolves, at 6:15 p.m. at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Center. Their last match was a 56-48 defeat last week to the Dominos Lady Heels. Joanne Remillard guided Dominos with 21 points and six steals while Lise Baril added 14 points and 19 rebounds. Khailan O’Connor scored a game-high 24 points and Guiesha Smith contributed 13 points and 15 rebounds. The Lady Heels have started out 3-0 while Wolves are 0-2.
Cayman’s other national champion is struggling on the men’s side. The Sol Blazers, 2-2, rank fourth out of six teams in division one of the Digicel National Men’s League. Sol are coming off a 77-59 drubbing at the hands of the 3-1 Dominos Warriors last Sunday. The Blazers had four players in double digits as Kevin Maxwell notched 17 points and 11 rebounds, Perry Levy netted 13 points and six rebounds, Davion Foster added 10 points and eight rebounds and Nicholas Beverly registered 10 points.
Collin Anglin turned back to clock to score 39 points and five 3-pointers for Dominos. Chris Lucas chipped in 19 points and Antonio Thompson contributed 10 points. As a result, the Warriors are tied with two other 3-1 sides, Silver Bullets and Caledonian Lions, atop the charts. Curtis Wilson (20 points), Adam Milburn (15 points), Stephen Shaw (15 points, 18 rebounds), Alex Brzozowicz (14 points off four 3-pointers) and Denton Cole (10 points) all hit double digits for the Bullets in a 102-51 clobbering of 0-4 George Town Sports Club. Eckerd McField (19 points) and Kristopher Brand (18 points) excelled for George Town.
Borislav Djordjic (28 points, 15 rebounds) and John White (11 points) took Caledonian past 1-3 Wendy’s Tarheels, 63-54. Clay Coleman led Wendy’s with 10 points.
Division one games continue on March 16 as George Town face Lions at 4 p.m., Warriors take on Bullets at 5:30 p.m. and Tarheels challenge Blazers from 7 p.m.
Division two is currently in round four of its seven-week campaign, with Team Philippines battling Cayman Islands Hoopsters at Camana Bay from 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
