Local swimming is bracing for an annual four-day meet
The Pete Ribbins Memorial Consolidated Water Meet, hosted by the Stingray Swim Club of Grand Cayman at the Lions Aquatic Centre, takes place March 20-23. This meet is an age group competitive meet which also features Masters events, and it starts on Thursday with the Masters races. Masters who are feeling particularly competitive may also compete in the 15 and over events.
“This is going to be an exciting meet,” said Dr. Brenda McGrath, a Stingray club director and co-meet director along with Pete Plunkett.
“These four day meets test our athletes in all their events, and allow them to compete in new events, as well their specialty events,” she said. “It is going to be exciting and any members of our community who have not watched a swim meet before should come down to one of the sessions to cheer on the swimmers.”
This weekend’s races will be mixed age sessions, though the younger swimmers will have their event predominantly on Sunday morning.
“We are delighted to continue our support of Cayman swimming by once again sponsoring the meet,” said Gregory S. McTaggart, vice president of Cayman Operations for Consolidated Water. “Sponsoring this meet, working with Stingray Swim Club and supporting our young athletes continues the legacy Pete started and honors the athletic lifestyle he led. We encourage everyone to stop by the pool to support the swimmers. For you, it may be one hour out of your day; for the swimmers, it is 1-2 hours for the youngest of swimmers; 12-15 hours for the older swimmers.”
