GT surprised by plucky Academy

George Town remains at the top of the Premier League after Sunday’s matches but may rue all its squandered chances in the 1-1 tie with Academy’s youngsters.

In the first half of the match at the TE McField Annex, George Town bombarded the Academy goal and repeatedly came close. But a mixture of sloppy finishing, excellent defending and sheer bad luck prevented George Town from going ahead.

A superb 30-yard shot from GT fullback Leon Whittaker was well saved early on, and attempts by Ariel Tatum, Tex Whitelocke, Leyton Elliott and Kevin Moore followed without success.

The George Town breakthrough came in the 65th minute through Whitelocke for his ninth of the season.

Academy, to its credit, did not lose heart. Spurred on by captain Yannick Solomon, Academy kept its shape and composure and was rewarded seven minutes later when Patrick Kirianki equalized.

In the earlier game at the TE McField Annex, Elite was two goals down within 22 minutes against Cayman Athletic but fought back well for a 2-2 draw.

Athletic’s youngsters Chris Myles and Chris Ebanks got the early goals before Jairo Sanchez, playing as the lone striker, pulled one back for Elite. Athletic absorbed the pressure as Elite pressed for the equalizer throughout the second half, and that eventually came in the 82nd minute through a pin-point Marvin Boothe free kick. In the only other match, North Side lost at home by a single goal against Scholars International. Lenox “Lenky” Bryan hit the winner nine minutes from time.

Bodden Town was in Puerto Rico playing in the Caribbean Football Union club championship, so their scheduled match at home to Sunset will be played on April 1 at 7:30 p.m.

George Town has 35 points from 15 games, Bodden Town remains second with 32 from 14, and Scholars is third with 28 points from 15 matches.

Sunset is fourth with 22 from 14, then it is Elite on 21 followed by Cayman Athletic on nine points. Academy is seventh, also on nine points, and North Side is bottom with six.

Bodden Town’s Theron Wood leads the scoring charts with 20 goals, Dwayne “Gaza” Wright of Elite has 12, and joint third are Scholars captain Oneil Taylor and Tex Whitelocke on nine.

Action turns to the first round of the FA Cup this weekend. On Saturday, Cayman Brac hosts Future at 5 p.m. and North Side faces Bodden Town at the TE McField Annex at 7 p.m.

On Sunday, at the Annex, Academy plays George Town in the early game and then Cayman Athletic faces Roma United in what promises to be an exciting encounter.

Roma is well clear at the top of the First Division. They are determined to get promoted this term, having come close last season, losing in the playoffs to North Side, who managed to stay in the Premier League.

Kiegel “Stamma” Atkinson has been on fire for Roma this season, and Fidel Wanderers in the Heineken Sunday League, top scorer in both. Atkinson wants some glory as well. Roma reached the final of the FA Cup last season but lost to Bodden Town. They want to go one better this term and could well do it.

At West Bay’s Ed Bush stadium, Scholars are matched with Tigers and then Elite face East End.
