Some 400 students from 12 high schools across the Cayman Islands are taking part in the 2014 Inter-secondary Track and Field meet which started Tuesday.
Spectators watched the competition unfold at the track at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex, beginning with the opening ceremony. There were finals in the 800 meters, 3000m and 110m hurdles.
There is no action on the track Wednesday as the focus is on field events from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The annual inter-secondary sports meet has become a highlight of Cayman’s athletic calendar. Youngsters use the meet as a qualifier for regional and international meets later in the year.
Some expected standouts include Tahj Lewis in the 400m and 800m, Kiara McLaughlin in the 800m and 1500m, and Jacob Stott in the high jump.
Thursday’s finals include 100m, 200m, 400m, 1500m and 4x100m relays. The relays are always exciting, especially when results influence overall standings.
Clifton Hunter won 27 gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals, collecting 51 medals in all last year. The John Gray Blazers amassed 59, with 16 golds, putting them second in the standings. Layman Scott placed third with 16 medals, including five golds.
Of the 300 athletes performing, exceptional performances came from Tiffany Cole, Tahj Lewis, Troy Long, Kiara McLaughlin, Jonathan Frederick, Javdon Nelson, Jouri Haylock, Ahmaree Piercy, Shenelle Stewart, Zac Hutchinson, Valeska Bennett, Louis Gordon and Pearl Morgan, many of whom are back again this time.
