Tennis options for youngsters in the Cayman Islands have rarely been better, with many programs and initiatives available.
Coach Dale Avery will continue to run the elite squad of around 16 kids after the first PwC event this year. Funded by the Tennis Federation of the Cayman Islands, it is free to the juniors selected.
The federation has supported overseas events by providing funds to partly cover coaches’ expenses and wants to see more international interaction.
There are plans to arrange an exchange with a Jamaica or Bahamas side in the same way coach Rob Sewell took a team to Jamaica last year.
The federation said it is grateful to sponsors Walkers, KPMG and Cayman National for continuing to back the after-school program. It struggled at the end of last year to fund the program but the sponsors helped to ensure tennis pros continue to go into government schools.
Coaches Thomas Neuert, Sewell and Noel Watkins provided discounted and free services to keep the schools program running until funds were secured.
Watkins continues in East End, North Side, George Town and Cayman Brac. Neuert works in West Bay and Sewell with Savannah Primary.
“The enthusiasm from the Brac has been fantastic and the federation is hoping we can bring a team over to compete in the PwC circuit soon,” said Jeremy Superfine, president of the tennis federation.
“We’re seeing juniors from the government schools wanting to take up tennis and it is encouraging the pros to find ways of keeping their interest after school through further coaching and mentoring.”
The federation’s annual general meeting is on March 27 at the tennis club in South Sound from 7 p.m.
