Panthers and Hellcats high five

Cayman Islands Flag Football Association completed its sixth week of games of the Digicel Summer Premier League on Saturday and the likely playoff positions became more predictable.

Going into the third year of the partnership with Digicel and the flag football association, the league’s executive board is happy with how the season is shaping up.

Being one of the fastest growing sports on island, many new faces are seen in both the men’s and women’s league. Presently on the men’s side, the Burger King Panthers and DMS Hellcats are tied with a record of 5-0.

Those two teams face off on Saturday at the Ed Bush stadium in West Bay at 1.15 p.m. to determine who will take the number 1 and 2 seeds in the playoffs.

The Panthers, led by quarterback Chris Lucas, are last year’s league champions and they feel confident to execute plays and exert the necessary pressure on defense.

Lucas has certainly showed his level of confidence in the QB slot and doesn’t seem to crack under pressure.

However, the Hellcats, who are perennial champions, are completely comfortable with pressure and feel that their experience will pull them through. The Island Heritage Predators, third in the men’s division, face the Cox Colts, who after rebuilding a great deal now seem to have a solid squad.

This is the first men’s game of the day, at noon, it should also be exciting.

The Predators, who are the league’s new team, focus extremely on the fundamentals well. Led by veteran players such as Will Peguero, Peter Whittaker and Baron Solomon who scored against the Panthers last Saturday, they are confident in securing a win this weekend and feel that they can compete with any team.

The Colts however, led by veteran QB Kevin Solomon, have a number of new players who have played together for a while. The team is mix of veterans and youth, but all seem to be on the same page when they step on the field.

They feel that they could be one of the four teams to go through to the playoffs. The prime time slot of the day belongs to Maples Dolphins versus the KPMG Sharks. Both teams are eager for a win to increase their standings in the seeding.

Made up of a lot of youth players, the Dolphins have not won a game yet this season. However, head coach Shawn Pitterson feels confident that a win will come.

Many of the Dolphins youngsters have come up from the youth league and they are developing well. Come playoff time, only four of the seven male teams will go through.

As the regular season comes to an end, the games are going to be more intense and more exciting.

Just as the men’s side is extra competitive, so are the women. Leading the pack are the Domino’s Lynx, who face Anytime Fitness Wolverines who are fourth. Led by new QB Jahzenia Thomas, the Wolverines are confident that this game will go in their favor. Thomas, who reads the field well, also has a great deal of speed when needed.

The Lynx, who have prided themselves on defense and their rush, feel that they can handle the threat of Thomas that their offense will be able to overcome the pressure.

The No. 2 seeded Androgroup Killa-Panthers play the Lady Sharks who are third. Christina Hefner is having another good season for the Panthers as one of the quarterbacks.

Both teams have a great deal of speed and experienced players. Jen Cotarelo of the Killa-Panthers who has been a key receiver is definitely one to watch. The fifth seeded Zulu Warriors face off against the seventh seeded Crossfit 7 Mile Scorpions.

The Scorpions, led by QB Jessica Pawlik, have struggled this season, but managed to secure their first win last weekend.

Head coach Josh Pawlik feels confident that his team will be able to carry forward their momentum in this weekend’s game.

The Warriors, who are led by veteran QB Dionne Whittaker, are loaded with speed and talent. However, some teams have found their own ways to pressure and silence the Warriors.

The Caledonian Killa B’zzz, who are sixth placed face off this Saturday against the eighth placed Star Athletic club. Both teams are hungry for a win to improve and rely on key rushers such as Amaris Pressley-Smith of the B’zzz and Amanda Nelson for the Stars.

Come playoff time, six of the eight women’s teams will go through. Week 7 of the Digicel Summer Premier League continues this Saturday, with games kicking off at Ed Bush from 11 a.m.
