Public health officials are investigating three new suspected cases of the mosquito-borne chikungunya virus.
There have been no new confirmed cases of the virus in Cayman since July 28. A total of five cases have been confirmed since the first cases were reported locally in June, according to the Cayman Islands Public Health Department.
Three new cases were under investigation during the week of Aug. 26 to Sept. 1, with blood samples being sent for testing at Caribbean Public Health Agency in Trinidad on Tuesday, Sept. 2, public health officials said in their latest update on local cases.
Of the four results received this week from CARPHA, all tested negative for chikungunya.
Since the first cases were reported in Cayman on June 25, a total of 29 cases have been investigated. Of the 26 results received so far, five have come back positive, 20 were negative and one was inconclusive.
According to health officials, to date, 9,139 confirmed or probable cases of chikungunya have been reported in the region, with the total suspected cases numbering 643,211.
