Health City hires first Caymanian doctor

Cayman’s newest hospital has hired its first Caymanian doctor.

Health City Cayman Islands announced this week that Dr. Irka Ebanks, 27, is now the senior house officer in the Cardiology Department at the East End hospital.

“I am really delighted to be a part of the team at Health City. It is wonderful to be back in the Cayman Islands and practice medicine to such a high degree,” Dr. Ebanks said.

Dr. Chandy Abraham, medical and facility director of Health City said the hospital planned to hire more Caymanians in the future.

Dr. Ebanks, who holds a degree in general medicine, said her goal was to train in Cayman, “so being at this facility is wonderful. I get first hand experience with a lot of things, I train here for a few years, and I go off to specialize in a field that I choose.” She said she had an interest in cardiology. “The heart has always been intriguing, and it’s a great field to go into,” she added.

Dr. Ebanks educational background includes four years at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus in Kingston, Jamaica, followed by one year at the University of the West Indies School of Clinical Medicine and Research in Nassau, Bahamas.

Prior to completing her studies in 2013, she interned at the Kingston Public Hospital, the Victoria Jubilee Hospital for Women and the Bustamante Hospital for Children in Jamaica. As part of her internship, she spent a three-month rotation in internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, general surgery and pediatrics at these hospitals.
