Online poll: Landfill most important gov’t project

A resolution to the George Town Landfill is seen as the most important government project, according to the results of last week’s caymancompass.com online poll.

Of the 590 total respondents, 326 of them – 55.3 percent – thought finding and implementing a solution for the George Town Landfill problem was the most important project for the government. The number of people giving this response more than doubled that of the potential project that received the second-most number of votes.

“For the sake of a few seats in Bodden Town, we all continue to suffer,” said one person.

“One would assume that if a million-dollar school was built next to the dump, some negotiations must have taken place,” said someone else. “If we were able to part with a portion of West Bay Road, why can’t we just conclude the deal to sell the dump? And yes, Bodden Town could have a new facility based on an improved knowledge of waste management available.”

Another person said, “The airport project is important too, but doing something about the dump is make or break for this government.”

“All of them, with the exception of the George Town beautification project, are needed, but none more than fixing the George Town landfill debacle,” commented one person.

“Useless politicians who can’t see what they are doing to us,” said someone else.

“The George Town landfill definitely needs to be taken care of soonest,” said another person.”

The airport renovation and expansion project received the second highest number of votes with 160, or 27.1 per cent of the total number of respondents. “Coming and going from the airport on a weekend is absolutely nuts,” said one person. “Standing in long lines that wrap around the buildings … took my family three solid hours to get through that tiny airport and finally board our plane. Cayman needs to be equipped to handle all of the traffic/visitors that come and go over a weekend.”

Another 63 respondents – 10.7 percent – thought a cruise ship berthing facility was the most important government project, although none of them left comments.

Fifteen people – 2.5 percent – thought the George Town beautification project was most important.

“There are so many problems that need to be addressed, but please improve George Town,” said one person. “Plant palm trees in the ground and in pots etc. That is what visitors want to see on a Caribbean island. Landscaping makes a huge difference.”

Only 13 respondents – 2.2 percent – thought the extension of the East-West Arterial Road was the most important government project, the same number that responded “other” to the question.

“I think the airport and landfill are equally important for tourists and residents alike,” said one person. “We must improve the airport experience, especially in high season and on weekends. The landfill and lack of adequate recycling affects everyone.”

“It may not be on the list of projects, but the most important thing Cayman needs is a government the produces results, not just talk,” said someone else.
