Cayman musician and store owner Ed Solomon underwent a shoulder replacement surgery at Health City Cayman Islands earlier this month, a first for the East End hospital.
Dr. Alwin Santiago Almeida, orthopedic and joint replacement surgeon, performed the surgery.
“It is rewarding to watch patients discover the joy of being pain-free and gain mobility they haven’t felt in years,” said Dr. Alwin, head of the hospital’s Department of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.
Since April, close to 70 orthopedic patients have visited the hospital for various procedures, including total and partial knee replacements, hip replacements, and foot surgeries, according to the hospital.
“I feel so great following the surgery, and am thankful to Dr. Alwin and the kind, supportive team I met,” said Mr. Solomon, who was suffering from severe arthritis in his right shoulder before the surgery.
In shoulder replacement surgery, the damaged parts of the shoulder are removed and replaced with artificial components.
“I was able to receive the surgery only a few days following my initial consult, and I am now able to move my shoulder and can feel a significant improvement even a few days following surgery,” said Mr. Solomon, who plays the saxophone. “As a musician, this has greatly improved my mobility, and I look forward to jamming at Hemingway’s [restaurant] very soon!”
