The Cayman Islands Sailing Club hosted the first regatta of the competitive sailing season, the Governor’s Cup, last weekend.
Deputy Governor Franz Manderson joined the Cayman Islands Sailing Club’s race committee on Saturday to start the first race of the J22 Governors Cup which was raced in the North Sound.
The two day regatta saw some tightly fought racing in often challenging conditions with half the fleet battling, and failing, to stay upright in the squally conditions in race one on Saturday.
The bright yellow spinnaker of the ever consistent Just Leaving Team, skippered by club commodore Mike Farrington, was unmistakable at the front of the fleet sporting its new Cayman Islands Yellow Pages sponsored branding.
In the final results, Just Leaving took overall regatta honors with wins in six of the seven races.
Spills and thrills marked the second day of the competition with big waves and strong winds again offering some challenging sailing conditions.
Mark McFee on Moonstruck held off the competition to secure second place and the Cayman Islands Youth Team, including both youth Olympians Florence Allen and Pablo Bertran, in their first team competition since their return from the Nanjing Games, finished in the bronze slot overall.
They ended their day pleasingly as they beat the overall regatta winners to claim a proud and well deserved first place in the seventh race of the series.
The next regatta at the Cayman Islands Sailing Club will be the Winter Series which starts on Sept. 28 with three races.
