A pair of Caymanian track and field stars recently made headlines on and off the track.
The fastest man in the Cayman Islands, Kemar Hyman, finished his season in disappointing fashion, while long jump talent Carlos Morgan has a new assignment overseas. Hyman, 24, suffered a false start in the 100 meters and was disqualified at the 50th Palio Citta Della Quercia meet in Rieti, Italy. Hyman’s race was won by Justin Gatlin in 9.83 seconds, capping an unbeaten season that featured some 18 events for the American sprinter. He is the first male runner to have an unbeaten season since Jamaica star Usain Bolt accomplished the feat in 2009.
Hyman had a decent campaign on the whole. His best stretch came this summer, when the George Town native won four consecutive European meets – including an impressive victory over former 100 meter world-record holder Asafa Powell – and posted a time of 10.05 seconds.
Cayman’s record-holder in the 100m, who is currently based in Florida, tailed off after the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. He was previously eighth out of eight competitors in the 100m, in 10.44 seconds, at the Birmingham Grand Prix in England last month. In Scotland, Hyman advanced to the 100m semifinals with his best time being 10.20 seconds. He was also part of the 4x100m relay team that was eliminated in the preliminary heats in a time of 40.50 seconds.
Also representing Cayman alongside Hyman was Morgan, who was eighth in his group with a leap of 7.41m. Morgan was named a volunteer assistant coach for the Georgia State University women’s track and field program. Georgia State, in Atlanta, competes in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
