Cydonie’s in record form

Cayman’s track and field athletes performed with distinction at several competitions over the weekend, but some were frustrated due to weather conditions.

Cydonie Mothersill set a meet record for the women’s 400 metres at the Milligan Relays in Johnson City, with a mark of 53.15 seconds, just two hundredths of a second off her Cayman national record.

Her husband, Ato Modibo, also chalked up records in the 200m at 21.39secs, and the 400m in 46.95secs.

Also at this meet several members of the King College squad were in action. Results posted credited Richard Ibeh with 11.47secs for the 100m, with Maxwell Hyman at 11.58secs.

On Saturday, the King College squad travelled to Western Carolina University and competed in wet and rainy conditions. Cassiann Lawrence has joined the King ladies’ track team, and ran 14.36secs for the 100m and Kristie Hurlston posted a 15.18secs mark.

Tyrell Cuffy was third in the men’s 100m in 10.83secs, with Richard Ibeh eighth at 11.30secs. Kemar Hyman false started.

In the 200m, Cuffy sped to third in 21.27secs, with Kemar fifth in 22.06. Maxwell Hyman turned in a 52.13secs posting for 400m.

Richard Ibeh also competd in the discus throw, reaching 34.73m metres.

In Houston, Omar Wright of Rice cleared 2.05 metres for second place in the Victor Lopez Bayou Classic high jump. Wright’s 2.10m performance a week earlier earned him a qualifying mark for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships later this spring.

Ronald Forbes enjoyed an outstanding afternoon by winning the men’s 110m hurdles at the University of Miami in 13.96secs, a Cayman national record, and just four hundredths shy of the Florida International University all-time best and good for a qualifier for the Division I regionals.

Forbes also clocked a 200m in 21.78secs. At Georgia Tech, Carl and Carlos Morgan were disappointed as rain and lightning caused the meet to be shortened and the triple jump and javelin events were not conducted. In the long jump, participants only completed three attempts, with Carlos 7.06m good for fourth place in the listings, as Carl reached 6.90m to take fifth.

Reports from Canada have Michael Letterlough working hard in the hammer throw and he has attained personal training bests with both the 5k and 7.26k implements.

Most of Cayman’s collegiate representatives are scheduled for meets this weekend at the Florida Relays, and the Texas Relays as well as at Furman University and Auburn University.
