Derek Haines, operations manager, and Chris Pope, logistics and purchasing manager, presented the Dart hurricane contingency plan at the Tropical Islands/Latin America workshop last Tuesday .
The National Hurricane Conference, held in Orlando, aims to improve hurricane preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation in order to save lives and property in the United States and the islands of the Caribbean and Pacific.
In addition, the conference serves as a national forum for federal, state and local officials to exchange ideas and recommend new policies to improve emergency management.
The conferences focuses on lessons learned from previous hurricane strikes, showcases state of the art programmes worthy of emulation and discusses new ideas being tested or considered.
The only speakers from the Caribbean’s private sector, Haines and Pope had impressed co-chair of the Tropical Islands/Latin America committee Mariana Leckner with their input at last year’s conference.
Drawing on their experience at Camana Bay, with a hurricane plan that was formulated after Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and given a test run by Hurricane Dean last year, Haines and Pope talked about best practices in hurricane planning and operating an emergency refuge.
Using Dart’s comprehensive hurricane plan as an example, Haines and Pope took attendees through every step of disaster management, from early preparation procedures through to post-evacuation and business continuity plans.
