Sailors improving

Cayman’s superb sailing facilities and location are attracting international recognition.

Perfect sailing conditions and a well-equipped facility have attracted foreign sailors to train at the Cayman Islands Sailing Club and associated National Sailing Centre.

Two groups of athletes spent time in March improving their skills on the waters of North Sound.

From 6-13 March, the National Sailing Centre hosted a visiting team of Byte and Laser sailors from Canada for the third Can-Cay Sailing Exchange.

The ten sailors used the facilities for winter training and a warm up for the summer sailing season in Canada.

In August, the CISC will send a group of young sailors to Canada to train and compete with the Canadians as the second half of the exchange program.

A clinic for younger athletes in the Optimist sailboat was launched over the Easter weekend.

The first Cayman Islands International Optimist Clinic brought 7 visiting sailors and their families from Germany, the Netherlands, France, and the United States. Together with 11 young Cayman based sailors the clinic ran for four days of intense on-water training.

‘Cayman is a good destination for families looking for a sailing vacation,’ said Cayman Islands Sailing Club Sailing Director Michael Weber. ‘Children can train all day while the parents enjoy a holiday. The visiting athletes also give our sailors some good competition, helping to improve the standard of youth sailing in Cayman.’
