Local dart players are gearing up for a huge tournament this summer.
The 16th annual Caribbean Championships will be played 24 July-4 August. Over 12 countries will participate in the various mini-tournaments of the championships being held in Trinidad.
Cayman will be among this year’s field. Officials from the local darts body say a national team has been selected. Names of team members will be announced at a later date.
The national team is expected to consist of some 16 delegates and supporters. They will include eight male and five female players plus a manager, assistant manager and coach.
National Team Manager Martin Bodden says Cayman will come in prepared to make a difference.
‘The national team will have rigorous training until July, mostly at Corner Pocket. Players will be constantly monitored and their technique fine-tuned.’
Announcement of the tournament comes as the local league wraps up its season. The winter version of the league, which started in November, is in its 23rd week. Games were played in five venues: Corner Pocket, Fidel Murphy’s, Bistro, Triple Crown and Dog House (formerly known as Davey Jones Locker in Grand Harbour).
The Caribbean Championships are held every two years. It is hosted by the Caribbean Darts Organization alongside the World Darts Federation. Normally some 12-16 countries attend the championship.
Among the mini-tournaments to be held are the America’s Cup (featuring the top players from the US and Canada) and a Pro Darts Corporation contest where players vie for a $5,000 grand prize and an automatic spot in the PDC World Championship.
Bodden went on to say competing in the tournament helps boost the level of darts in Cayman.
‘Nowadays, darts is throughout the world and is a professional sport.
‘For us, competing in the Caribbean Championship only gives even more exposure to darts in Cayman.’
The Cayman Darts Association would like any companies/persons interested in helping to sponsor the national team to call CDA President Arthur Ebanks at 916-7595 or CDA Vice-President Philip Parsons at 916-8965.
