Give the gift of sight

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organisation with 1.3 million members in approximately 45,000 clubs in 202 countries and geographical areas.

Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes. Founded in 1917, the volunteer organisation’s motto is We Serve.

In 1925, Helen Keller challenged Lions to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness” during the association’s international convention.

Today, Lions are recognised worldwide for their service to the blind and visually impaired and in July 2007 Lions Clubs International Foundation ranked best among non-governmental organizations worldwide. From 34 global organisations, LCIF came in first for its execution of programmes, demonstrated accountability, communications internally and externally, programme adaptability to the surrounding community, and understanding the goals of its corporate supporters.

The ratings were compiled by the Financial Times in association with the Dalberg Global Development Advisors and the United Nations Global Compact.

Once again, we the Lions Club of Grand Cayman, will be celebrating our Annual White Cane Week from 20 April to 26 April. We started the week with a church service at the Savannah United Church and we will take to the streets on 26 April in our yellow vest to seek your kind donations.

The Lions Club of Grand Cayman continues to demonstrate their commitment to sight conservation through our annual sight screening programs in all schools where we screened over 1,000 students at a cost of approximately $52,000, our eyeglass recycling project, various sight services in the form of eye operations, spectacles, other eye-related medical assistance and also purchases of various equipment for the Lions Eye Clinic, located on the Health Services Authority’s compound, over the years.

Proceeds from White Cane Week fundraising have supported many of the above projects and as a result of your kind contribution last year we were able to equip the Lions Eye Clinic with the Corneal Topographer at a cost of $25,000, which is used on a daily basis to reduce the number of eye diseases and overseas referrals. The funds raised this year will be spent on our various sight projects and another piece of specialist equipment to be identified by the Eye Clinic.

Your kind donations and contributions to this worthy cause is highly valued; therefore our community partnership is very important. As you consider our theme this year, Recommitting to Service through Teamwork, I know your donation will assist us in achieving our goals and objectives, thereby, eliminating preventable and reversible blindness.

President of the Lions Club of Grand Cayman,
