The White Cane is a symbol of the courage and unwavering spirit required to live in a world without sight; and I commend all of the people in our community who are either blind or visually impaired. Their efforts and determination to lead productive lives are an inspiration to us all.
I also take this opportunity to thank the Lions Club of Grand Cayman, who dedicate a week each year, to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting our vision. In addition, through various programmes and initiatives, they have provided school children with free annual sight screening tests and continue to assist with some funding of eye examinations, glasses and surgery to those who cannot afford the cost. They were also instrumental in establishing the Lion’s Eye Clinic in 1992 in conjunction with the Health Services Authority, which continues to serve the public.
The good news is that eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal disorders can be prevented through regular screenings, especially for persons who are diabetic and persons over 40 years of age. Exercising regularly and leading a healthy lifestyle can also help reduce the risks of age related macular degeneration.
So while members of the Lions Club of Grand Cayman certainly do their part to address eye care related issues, we as individuals must never take our eye sight for granted. Once sight is lost, or even partially lost, it is nearly impossible to regain, therefore I encourage everyone to take the appropriate measures to protect your eyes and preserve your vision.
During this week, I urge all residents to support the blind and visually impaired by giving generously to the Lion’s Club of Grand Cayman. Our eyesight is a precious gift from God and we need to do all we can to assist those who cannot see. If we work together as a community, we can help raise awareness about the importance of taking care of our vision, and strengthen the commitment to make a difference in the lives of those without sight.
