In response to Lois’ letter on 14 April, 2008, I will have to agree with it 500 per cent.
I find it absolutely foolish to take away a part of Caymanian culture and heritage to build a road.
I was in a meeting with some of my fellow students [most 15 and 16 years old] reading the letter and everyone’s reaction was quite the same. ‘What goin on ya’ and ‘They can’t be serious’ were some of the few words shared.
Later we visited the site ourselves to see what was one of the most beautifully preserved parts of Cayman; not even a can of soda or a bag of chips.
The ghost orchids, the vine cacti and the many silver thatch palms make up the forest along with many other plant species.
There is even what seems to be a long fault line across the forest. This forest needs to be preserved and turned into a national reserve. In my 12 years of learning I have never heard about this forest and am disappointed.
In the textbooks all I read about are other Caribbean countries with there this and there that, not knowing that it is here on my own island.
The government needs to realise that more will be gained in the long run if we protect the environment and our heritage and not just building, building, building.
I understand that development is important but to what extent. Caymanians I beg you to voice your opinion on this matter. We can not allow this if we want our culture too stay alive, we live in a Democratic society not a Communist one.
